"Spotlight" Submission Guidelines

WHO the Spotlight's for

Are you an English major, faculty member or grad student with a noteworthy accomplishment you'd like to share? Perhaps you know someone who is and does. Perhaps your favorite English teacher has recently published a book; perhaps you're the parent of an English major who's recently published an article in The Red and Black; perhaps one of your fellow graduate students in English has just won an award. The "Spotlight" on the English Department homepage is there to feature the accomplishments -- big or small -- of anyone associated with the department: majors, faculty, staff, graduate students and alumni/ae. You can write up an article about yourself, write one about someone else, or send them a link to this page and encourage them to submit something.

WHAT the Spotlight's for

A "noteworthy accomplishment" can be anything you like. It can be something related to the professional work we do as writers and scholars, but it doesn't have to be that. Perhaps you've published a book, an article, a poem or a short story. Perhaps you've been working on a literary magazine. Perhaps you've won an award, a scholarship or a fellowship. Perhaps you're in a band or have a reading coming up. Perhaps you're active in local charity, are on the lacrosse team or a member of Demosthenian. English majors (and English teachers) are an eclectic bunch. Maybe you breed guinea pigs; maybe you're an avid photographer or blogger. The Spotlight doesn't have to be about grand professional accomplishments; it can also be a way for people in the UGA English community to get to know more about each other.

HOW to be in the Spotlight

Spotlight articles on the English homepage cycle at random. To submit an article to be included in the rotation, simply e-mail the text of the article and a photo to the the appropriate contact (see below). Here's what they'll need:

  1. A photo. Size: anything, but preferably at least 300 pixels wide. Orientation: preferably vertical.
  2. A headline. Preferably ten words or less.
  3. The text. The text of the article can be as long or as short as you like, but should be at least 50 words. The first 100 words of your text will appear on the homepage in the Spotlight box. If your article's longer than 100 words -- and that's great -- there will be a "read more" link which will take people to the full article. Articles will support URLs, so feel free to include links, when relevant, to external websites: your homepage, an online site where your work's been published, a site with an article about you, etc.

When you're done, simply e-mail your photo, headline and article (either as a regular e-mail or an attached file) to the appropriate contact person:
